Mark Johnson
Mark and his wife, Mitzi, worship God as members of Christ’s Body at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Chapel Hill, where Mark serves as a lay prayer minister. Mark and Mitzi are making a small farmstead in nearby Hillsborough, desiring to steward all that is entrusted to them in a way that pleases God.
Mark was first introduced to spiritual direction at Society of St. John the Evangelist. Forty years on, receiving and offering Christian spiritual direction continue to reveal that taking up one’s cross and following Jesus is equally a call to action and contemplation, each needing the companionship and guidance of the Spirit.
Mark’s academic background is in literature and philosophy; his vocational experience centered on environmental enterprise. Heeding God’s call to serve others with his gift of listening, Mark first completed the Northwind Institute Certificate Program in Spiritual Formation, based on Henri Nouwen’s collective work on direction, formation, and discernment. He recently graduated from the Selah-Anglican Spiritual Direction Certificate Program.
Mark’s ministry of spiritual direction is informed by both ancient and contemporary teachers of the contemplative life. When practiced well, this ministry is rightly the work of the Holy Spirit.
